Beliefs & Values

Learn more about our Evangelical identity, doctrinal statement, and the 6 core values that inspire all that we do.

Foundational Beliefs

Evangelical Identity:

Decision Point is an Evangelical Christian organization. Therefore, we recruit and enlist only evangelical Christians as Volunteers, Lead Coaches, Staff and Board Members.

Doctrinal Statement:

Leaders and employees within Decision Point personally affirm this statement, and all their teaching in Decision Point is kept with this covenant on all issues that the statement addresses.

Decision Point: Doctrinal Statement - adopted December 17, 2021

  1. There is one God eternally existing in three persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This one God is the creator of all things visible and invisible.

  1. Jesus is the eternal Son of God who took on flesh and became a man, without compromising or shedding His Deity. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He alone accomplished our salvation through His perfect life and sacrificial death on the cross for our sins. There is salvation in no one but Him. God raised Him physically from the dead. He ascended to Heaven and He will come again to judge the living and the dead. (Isaiah 53:4-6; John 1:1-3; 13:13; 14:6; Acts 4:12; I Corinthians 15.3-6; Philippians 2:11; Hebrews 10:12-14)

  1. The Holy Spirit is a divine person of the Godhead. He convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and truth, and draws men and women to faith in Christ. He is given to all true believers to indwell them. He empowers and equips believers for service and enables growth in their walk with God. He purifies them from sin and the deeds of the flesh. He produces in them the fruit of the Spirit and assures them of their salvation. (John 3:6-7; Acts 1:8; 2:4; I Corinthians 2:14-15; 12:11-13; II Corinthians 3:18; Galatians 5:22-23; I Peter 1:2, I John 4:13)

  1. The Bible is the inspired and authoritative Word of God. It is our only authority in faith and practice. Because every word is inspired by God, it is without error in the original manuscripts. It is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness. Believers study it diligently so that they may be good servants who are equipped for lives of fruitful ministry. (II Timothy 2.15; 3:16-17, II Peter 1:21)

  1. Mankind was created by God in His image but willfully chose to sin. All men and women are now born under sin and live their lives as sinners deserving judgment from God. All those who believe in Jesus will be saved from this judgment. All others will consciously receive their due punishment by the righteous wrath of God forever in Hell. (Isaiah 53:6; Mark 9:43-44; Luke 16:23-24; John 3:36; Romans 3:9-12; 5:12)

  1. God saves those sinners who repent of their sins and believe in Jesus Christ. They are justified freely and exclusively by God’s grace, through faith in Christ, and apart from works. They are forgiven of all their sins, born again as new creatures, and adopted as children of God. The gospel is the message that God, the holy creator and ruler of the world, sent His only Son to live a perfectly righteous life, die as an atoning sacrifice for our sins, and rise from the dead, so that sinful men and women who repent of their sins and trust in Christ as their Savior and Lord, though deserving death and hell, can be forgiven and have peace with God and eternal life as children of God. (John 5:24; Acts 16:31; Romans 3:23-26; Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; Hebrews 9:11-14).

  1. The church is composed of those who are called by God and have received Jesus as their savior and Lord. God has entrusted the church with the mission to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to people everywhere and to make disciples who obediently follow Christ. God has called the church to be the people of God, the body of Christ, and the temple of the Holy Spirit. Believers are called to a life of good works in service to God as committed participants in a local church where believers are baptized, study the word, pray, and worship God together. (Matthew 18:20; 28:18-20; Acts 2:42; I Corinthians 1:2; 12:3, 27; Ephesians 2:19-22; Hebrews 10:24-25, I Peter 2:9-10)

  1. Believers must honor God’s plan for life, gender and sexuality. Because mankind was made in the image of God, all human life is sacred and must be treated accordingly. Life is a precious gift that begins at the moment of conception. God created humanity as man and woman and ordained marriage between a man and a woman with the gift of sexual intimacy exclusively in this context. Therefore believers are commanded to run from temptations that pervert that good gift, including lust, adultery, homosexuality, fornication, and pornography. Self-conception as male or female should be defined by God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption as revealed in Scripture. Accordingly, adopting a homosexual or transgender self-conception is not consistent with God’s holy purposes in creation and redemption. Believers are under no obligation to speak in such ways that dishonor God’s design of his image bearers as male and female but rather have a duty to speak the truth in love, including when we speak to or about one another as male or female. (Genesis 1:27; 2:24; 19:4-7, 13; 26:8-9; Leviticus 18:1-30; Psalm 139:13; Mark 10:6-9; Romans 1:26-29; 1 Corinthians 5:1; 6:9; II Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 5:22-23, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 13:4, *portions adapted from the Nashville Statement 7,11)

Core Values

At Decision Point, we adhere to six core values that guide our actions.
God Directed
  • Focused On God’s Purposes: We choose projects of eternal significance that we believe God wants done. What God wants done always deals with the eternal and thus has eternal significance. This significance has an attraction and attracts more participants. “If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work” (1 Cor. 3:12-13).
  • Fed by God’s Word: We saturate ourselves in the word of God and follow His commands to reach the world for Christ in the way He prescribes. “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15).
  • Filled by God’s Spirit: We encourage our team to be filled with His Spirit all the time. We believe that this practice will empower our organization in our decisions, processes, and personal lives. “So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:17-18). We aspire to do everything in the power of the Holy Spirit, depending on Him for everything: big and small, complex and simple. “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law” (Gal. 5:22-23).
  • Fueled by Prayer: We are each commanded to pray without ceasing and cannot succeed in our day-to-day work or accomplish our larger goals without it. More than our own prayers, we realize that we will not see the changes we’re working toward without the prayers of many. Much like Moses raised the staff of God over the Israelite army and led to their victory (Exod. 17:9-13), the uplifted prayer of God’s people provides strength for the battle before us today. “I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling” (1 Tim. 2:8).
Initiative Witnessing
  • We believe that God’s word is powerful and seek to share it early and often in all our interactions. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
  • Sharing the gospenecessarily involves using words. The Bible teaches that people must believe in order to be saved, but before they can believe, they must hear, and before they can hear, someone must tell them. “How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? “(Rom. 10:14-17)
  • We are faithful to Christ when we take the initiative to share the gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit and leave the results to God. While our goal in evangelism is to help people become lifelong followers and worshippers of Christ, we recognize that the fruit of our efforts is in God’s hands.
  • We recognize our place in front-line evangelistic work and initial follow-up on campuses, so we partner with local churches to carry out long-term discipleship.
Momentum-Creating Strategies
  • We design projects and events that are adventure-based so that we attract visionaries, adventurers, leaders, and entrepreneurs.
  • We undertake projects of strategic significance that seem impossible except for God, thus attracting people who want to accomplish the impossible for God.
  • After creating momentum through these projects, we capitalize on it and “catch the wave” to deepen and direct the momentum toward our long-term purposes of reaching high school and middle school students across America.
Lasting Transformation
  • We value short-term volunteers. Most of our long-term recruits begin as short-term volunteers. Even though our model is based on short-term volunteers, we design our projects for long-term transformation in the lives of students, the culture of Christian clubs, and the spiritual climate of school campuses.
  • We seek to build long-standing partnerships with churches, investors, and the community to accomplish long-term transformation of American schools.
  • We design systems – such as our coaching model - so that short-term volunteers with frequent turnover are effective in helping accomplish our long-term goals.
Accelerated Leadership
  • In keeping with the concept of ‘staff-directed, student-led’ ministry, we expect all of our staff to empower students as leaders and give them significant responsibility as soon as possible. This means that our staff need to be exceptional leaders and trainers in all aspects of leadership, but must be willing to take a back seat to the student or participant leaders and not need to be up front and in the limelight all of the time.
  • We pass off leadership of campuses, projects, and geographical areas as fast as possible, recognizing that only through fully mobilizing all of God’s people available will our impossible task of sharing the gospel “until every student has heard” be accomplished.
  • Leaders frame the tasks in enough detail to give direction but leave plenty of room for creativity and implementation. We believe that mistakeare one of the greatest learning tools of leadership so we allow for them and appreciate them as learning experiences.
  • We treat our leaders and students as powerful, intelligent, capable adults who don’t want to be bored, but want to be fully resourced. Our program is optimized to attract first-class people and set them free to reach students for Christ.
Action-Based Training
  • We provide training in terms of broader principles with application far beyond our current project so that leaders can apply them in unexpected situations now and throughout their lives.
  • One does not really learn until one teaches the content so we train participants experientially and require them to teach it soon after they’ve acquired it.
  • We take people who are willing and wired in the direction of our mission, regardless of experience and prior training, and give them all the training they need.
